Robert K. Merton was an American sociologist who connected theoretical concepts with empirically researchable problems. At Columbia he contributed to social theory, deviance research, mass communication, organizations, and the sociology of knowledge and science.

Merton developed concepts that entered both scholarly and everyday language, including self-fulfilling prophecy, role model, and unintended consequences. In 1994 he became the first sociologist awarded the U.S. National Medal of Science.
