Unintended Consequences and Functions

Merton distinguished intended outcomes from consequences actors do not foresee. His functional analysis similarly separated manifest functions, which participants recognize and intend, from latent functions that occur without forming the stated purpose.

These distinctions prevent an institution’s official explanation from being treated as a complete account of what it does. Merton also emphasized dysfunctions and variation rather than assuming every social pattern benefits a whole society.
