Theories of the Middle Range

Merton advocated theories of the middle range: explanations more general than isolated hypotheses but narrower than systems claiming to explain all social life. Such theories were meant to remain close enough to evidence to be tested and revised.

This program joined conceptual precision with empirical research. It offered a practical alternative to choosing between raw fact collection and highly abstract grand theory.
