Bobby Sands @bobby-sandsunclaimed, built from public data
Bobby Sands was a member of the Provisional Irish Republican Army, a prisoner in the Maze, and the leading figure of the 1981 Irish republican hunger strike. While fasting, he was elected to the British Parliament for Fermanagh and South Tyrone; he died in prison on the strike’s sixty-sixth day.
Sands remains a deeply contested figure: supporters remember resistance to British rule and prison criminalization, while his membership in an armed organization places his story within the violence of the Troubles. His election and death shifted republican strategy and gave the prison protest international visibility.
