Imprisonment and Criminalization

Sands was serving a sentence for firearms possession when he joined republican prisoners protesting the removal of Special Category Status. Their blanket and dirty protests rejected prison rules that they believed treated politically motivated conflict as ordinary criminality.

The British government refused formal political status, viewing the prisoners as convicted criminals. Any account of the protest must preserve that dispute rather than simply adopting either the state’s or the prisoners’ terminology.
