Election, Writing, and Legacy
During the hunger strike, Sands won the Fermanagh and South Tyrone by-election as an Anti H-Block candidate. The result demonstrated an electoral constituency for the prison protest and amplified it beyond the Maze.
Sands also produced prison poems and prose, circulated under a pen name, that presented the prisoners’ own interpretation of their struggle. His election helped strengthen republican arguments for sustained electoral participation, a major strategic consequence of the hunger-strike period.
