From Household Work to Astronomy

After immigrating to the United States and being abandoned while pregnant, Fleming worked in the household of observatory director Edward Pickering. He later hired her at Harvard, where she proved highly skilled with photographic spectra.

Fleming soon took responsibility for classification and for coordinating other women computers. Her career was built through technical competence, organization, and years of intellectual labor—not through one lucky promotion.
