Curating the Photographic Sky

In 1899 Fleming became curator of astronomical photographs, one of Harvard’s earliest formal appointments for a woman. She managed records, correspondence, publications, and staff alongside her research.

Those tasks were foundational to a durable scientific collection even when labeled administrative. The preserved plate stacks still let astronomers examine how the sky changed across more than a century.
