Classifying and Discovering

Fleming classified stars by patterns in their hydrogen spectral lines and contributed to the Draper Catalogue. Annie Jump Cannon later reorganized and simplified this framework into the sequence used today.

While examining plates, Fleming identified novae, variable stars, and nebulae, including the object now called the Horsehead Nebula. The plate archive allowed discovery through systematic comparison, not only telescope observing.
