Trauma Work and Women’s Organizing

Liberia’s wars shaped Gbowee’s early adulthood and led her into social work and trauma-healing programs. Working with women revealed both the gendered effects of war and their capacity to organize across communities.

Rather than treating women only as victims, Gbowee helped build spaces where they could become public actors. Shared experiences of displacement, abuse, hunger, and family loss became a basis for coordinated demands.
