Jocelyn Bell Burnell is a Northern Irish astrophysicist who discovered the first radio pulsars while a graduate student at Cambridge. Her painstaking recognition of an unusual repeating signal in 1967 opened a new way to study neutron stars, gravity, and the interstellar medium.

She later built a wide-ranging research and academic leadership career and became an influential advocate for greater inclusion in physics. At Oxford she is a professorial fellow of Mansfield College and a visiting academic in physics.
