Finding the First Pulsars

Bell Burnell helped build and operate a radio telescope designed to study quasars, then manually examined long paper charts of its output. She noticed a small, recurring trace that did not resemble ordinary interference and persisted in investigating it.

The signal proved to come from a rapidly rotating neutron star whose radio beam sweeps past Earth with extraordinary regularity. More examples confirmed a new class of astronomical object: pulsars.
