Suicide, Religion, and Social Integration

Durkheim’s Suicide used variations in suicide rates to argue that apparently private acts also reflect levels of social integration and regulation. The study distinguished social conditions rather than explaining every death through a single individual motive.

His later work on religion examined how shared classifications, rituals, and distinctions between sacred and profane express and renew collective life. Both projects show his concern with the bonds connecting individuals to groups.
