Social Facts and Sociological Method

Durkheim defined sociology around social facts: patterned ways of acting, thinking, and feeling that confront individuals as an external social environment. His methodological rule was to study these facts as objects of inquiry, using comparison and evidence rather than intuition alone.

This approach gave society an analytical reality of its own while still examining how institutions operate through people. It supplied a program for explaining one social fact through other social conditions.
