Rebuilding LIGO

Appointed LIGO principal investigator in 1994 and director in 1997, Barish reorganized the project, secured a staged construction plan, and broadened participation beyond its original MIT–Caltech core.

He created the LIGO Scientific Collaboration so researchers from many institutions could develop instruments, analyze data, and share scientific responsibility. This structure helped make later detector upgrades and discovery possible.
