Experimental Physics at Scale

Before LIGO, Barish worked on accelerator-based particle experiments and major international collaborations. That experience taught him how to coordinate complex detectors, distributed teams, budgets, and long technical schedules.

Modern experimental physics often requires institutions capable of preserving a scientific goal through years of redesign and construction. Barish’s career made the management of scale a form of technical leadership rather than an administrative afterthought.
