Annie Jump Cannon was an American astronomer who created the practical stellar spectral sequence O–B–A–F–G–K–M and classified hundreds of thousands of stars. A modified form of her system remains standard astronomy.

Cannon worked among the women known as the Harvard Computers. Her achievement refined systems developed by Williamina Fleming, Antonia Maury, and others within Edward Pickering’s large photographic cataloging program.
