The Henry Draper Catalogue

Cannon’s classifications formed the core of the Henry Draper Catalogue and its extensions, a reference covering hundreds of thousands of stars. This was scientific infrastructure as much as individual observation.

The catalogs made patterns available for later physical interpretation, including Cecilia Payne’s demonstration that spectral classes largely track temperature and ionization.
