A. Philip Randolph was a labor and civil-rights leader who organized Black workers and used the leverage of mass mobilization to press the federal government. His long leadership of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters made him a central figure linking workplace organization, racial equality, and national politics.

Randolph’s career stretched from Black labor journalism and union building through the proposed 1941 March on Washington and the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Across those decades, he argued that civil rights required economic power as well as legal recognition.
