Jobs, Freedom, and the 1963 March

Randolph was a principal organizer and senior leader of the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, with Bayard Rustin directing much of its planning and logistics. The event united civil-rights, labor, religious, and civic groups around a shared national program.

Its title preserved Randolph’s insistence that racial justice included employment and economic security. The march represented the culmination of a strategy he had pursued for decades rather than a single isolated demonstration.
