Theodore Roosevelt was the twenty-sixth president of the United States, serving from 1901 to 1909 after William McKinley’s assassination. He expanded the public power of the presidency, pursued progressive-era regulation, and made federal conservation a central national policy.
His legacy also includes nationalism, racial hierarchy, military enthusiasm, and an interventionist foreign policy that strengthened U.S. imperial power. The same energetic presidency used for corporate regulation and land protection was also used to dominate countries in the Caribbean and Latin America.
