Voting, Trial, and Citizenship

In 1872, Anthony voted in Rochester and was prosecuted. She used the case to argue that citizenship under the Fourteenth Amendment already included women’s right to vote.

The court rejected that claim, but the trial became a public demonstration of women’s exclusion from political authority. Anthony’s act connected constitutional argument with organized civil disobedience.
