An Organizer Before the Bus

Parks served as secretary of the Montgomery NAACP for much of the period from 1943 to 1956. Her work included youth organizing and documenting racial injustice, including participation in the investigation of the assault on Recy Taylor.

This history changes the meaning of her bus protest. Parks acted from political experience and a sustained commitment to dignity, not from a single spontaneous impulse. Her preparation also connected her case to organizations capable of turning an arrest into coordinated action.
