Testimony, Memory, and Debate

The interview-based book commonly published in English as I, Rigoberta Menchú made her story globally known. It belongs to the Latin American testimonial tradition, in which a speaker’s life communicates a broader collective experience.

Later scholarship challenged the accuracy or attribution of some episodes, generating debate about memory, editing, representation, and political advocacy. These disputes should be stated without using them to erase independently documented atrocities of Guatemala’s war.
