At UC San Diego, Burbidge studied galaxy rotation, active galactic nuclei, and quasars and helped establish the Center for Astrophysics and Space Sciences.

She served as director of the Royal Greenwich Observatory and helped develop the Faint Object Spectrograph for the Hubble Space Telescope, extending spectroscopy into space-based astronomy.
