Challenging Exclusion

Burbidge was denied observing access at Mount Wilson because women could not stay at its facilities. She later became a prominent critic of gender barriers in astronomy.

She declined a women-only award because she wanted scientific recognition evaluated without segregation. Her institutional firsts mattered, but so did the wider reforms pursued with other women scientists.
