Speaking from Swat

Growing up in Mingora, Yousafzai attended the school run by her father, educator Ziauddin Yousafzai. When the Pakistani Taliban restricted girls’ education in Swat, she spoke publicly and, at age eleven, wrote an anonymous BBC diary about life under the campaign against schooling.

Her advocacy emerged from a family and local community already committed to education. Recognizing that setting helps avoid presenting her as a solitary exception: her voice became internationally visible because it expressed a struggle shared by many girls, families, and educators.
