Caste, Partition, and Legacy

Gandhi opposed untouchability but defended aspects of varna for much of his life, bringing him into profound disagreement with B. R. Ambedkar and anti-caste movements. During Partition he worked to stop communal violence and defend minorities. A Hindu nationalist assassinated him in January 1948, months after independence.
