Burbidge continued to challenge standard Big Bang cosmology and argued that some quasar redshifts were not cosmological. Mainstream evidence did not support those claims.

Scientific dissent can reveal assumptions, but longevity and prestige do not substitute for predictive success. His legacy therefore includes both important accepted work and a conspicuous example of a research program that failed to persuade the field.
