Active Galaxies and Quasars

At UCSD, Burbidge studied nonthermal radiation, active galactic nuclei, and quasars—objects whose enormous luminosities revealed extreme physical environments.

He also served as scientific editor of the Astrophysical Journal and edited Annual Review of Astronomy and Astrophysics, shaping how research circulated across the field.
