War Leadership and the Allied Coalition

Before formal U.S. entry into World War II, Roosevelt supported countries fighting the Axis through measures including Lend-Lease. After Pearl Harbor, he directed mobilization and worked with Allied leaders on a global military strategy.

The war brought industrial recovery and eventual victory but also enormous state power, rationing, conscription, censorship, and strategic compromises. Roosevelt died in April 1945 before Germany’s surrender and the use of atomic bombs against Japan.
