Executive Order 9066 and Civil Rights

In February 1942, Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, authorizing military exclusion zones that produced the forced removal and incarceration of people of Japanese ancestry, most of them U.S. citizens.

The policy treated ancestry as a security proxy and deprived families of liberty, property, and due process. It stands as a defining abuse of executive authority within a presidency otherwise associated with democratic wartime leadership.
