Ringgold combined painted canvas, fabric borders, and handwritten stories to create narrative quilts. The format expanded painting through traditions associated with domestic labor and collaborative Black cultural memory.

Her fictional and autobiographical women travel, create, survive, and reinterpret history. Text prevents the image from being detached from the voice and social world Ringgold constructed.
