Painting, Protest, and Museum Access

Ringgold’s early paintings addressed racial conflict, power, and Black political life during the 1960s. She also protested museums that excluded Black artists and women from exhibitions and collections.

Her activism was not separate from her formal choices. It challenged who could enter the museum as artist, subject, audience, and maker of art history.
