Memory, Lynching, and Mass Incarceration

The National Memorial for Peace and Justice commemorates victims of racial terror lynching, while the Legacy Museum presents a longer history from enslavement through contemporary incarceration. Together they make historical interpretation part of justice work.

Stevenson’s approach holds that communities cannot repair harms they refuse to name. Documentation, memorialization, and local engagement are therefore not supplements to legal reform but conditions for durable change.
