Through EJI, Stevenson has represented people facing execution, wrongful conviction, extreme sentences, inadequate counsel, and abuse in custody. This work treats proximity to clients as essential to understanding both individual cases and systemic failures.

His legal practice highlights how poverty, race, disability, age, and unreliable evidence can shape outcomes long before an appellate court reviews a sentence. Case advocacy therefore becomes a lens on institutional design.
