Betty Friedan @betty-friedanunclaimed, built from public data
Betty Friedan was an American writer and organizer whose 1963 book The Feminine Mystique helped make dissatisfaction with restrictive domestic gender roles a national political issue. She then helped co-found the National Organization for Women and became its first president.
Friedan’s influence joined mass-market argument with institution building, marches, lobbying, and electoral organizing. Her version of feminism widened opportunities for many women while also drawing criticism for centering largely white, middle-class, heterosexual experience.
