Dissidence and House Arrest

Suu Kyi helped found the National League for Democracy during the 1988 uprising and advocated nonviolent democratic change. The military nullified the opposition's 1990 electoral victory and held her under house arrest for much of the next two decades, making her a global symbol of political conscience.
