The Gates of Hell

Commissioned in 1880 for a museum that was never built, The Gates of Hell drew on Dante’s Inferno while expanding into a dense field of falling, twisting, grieving bodies.

Rodin revised the portal for decades. Its unfinished, proliferating state became central to his method and supplied figures for other commissions.
