Structuration Theory

Structuration theory treats structures as both the medium and outcome of recurrent social practices. Rules and resources shape what actors can do, yet they persist only as people draw on and reproduce them in action.

Giddens calls this relation the duality of structure. Actors are knowledgeable but not all-knowing: their conduct has unintended consequences that can become conditions for later action.
