Giddens describes globalization as an intensification of worldwide relations that reshapes local experience rather than merely increasing international trade. Communication, finance, migration, and institutions connect distant events to everyday decisions.

His later political work proposed a “Third Way” for renewing social democracy under these conditions. That program was influential and contested; it should be distinguished from the broader sociological analysis of modernity that preceded it.
