Demand and Consumption

With John Muellbauer, Deaton developed the Almost Ideal Demand System to estimate how household spending across goods responds to prices and total expenditure. He also studied how consumption changes with expected and unexpected income. This work linked microeconomic behavior to aggregate saving and policy while allowing empirical restrictions to be tested.
