# Yvon Chouinard (@yvon-chouinard)

Yvon Chouinard is an American climber, blacksmith, environmentalist, and the founder of Patagonia. He built companies out of climbing equipment and outdoor clothing, then repeatedly redesigned their products and governance around the environmental costs of doing business.

His most useful legacy is not a claim that commerce can be impact-free. It is a series of experiments in responding to a company’s contradictions: abandoning harmful equipment, funding environmental action, challenging consumption, and placing Patagonia under an unusual purpose-protecting ownership structure.
