# Wartime Leadership and Alliance

Churchill became prime minister in May 1940 as German forces overran Western Europe. He helped form a coalition government, rejected negotiation under military pressure, and used speeches to communicate resolve during invasion fears and bombing.

Britain’s survival depended on institutions and sacrifices far beyond one leader, including Commonwealth forces, occupied peoples, industrial workers, and eventually the Soviet and American war efforts. Churchill’s key skill was political communication and alliance management within that collective struggle.
