# Empire, War, and Failure

Before 1940, Churchill held many military and civilian offices. During the First World War he helped drive the failed Dardanelles and Gallipoli operations, which caused major losses and forced him from the Admiralty.

He remained an unapologetic imperialist whose views on race and colonial rule shaped his politics. His stance toward India and the British government’s wartime response to the Bengal famine are central to critical reassessment of his legacy.
