# Williamina Fleming (@williamina-fleming)

Williamina Fleming was a Scottish-born astronomer who became a central scientific and administrative figure at Harvard College Observatory. She developed an early system for classifying stellar spectra, cataloged thousands of objects, and supervised women computers.

Her rise from domestic employment is striking, but should not be treated as a fairy tale detached from labor. Fleming’s expertise grew through sustained observatory work inside a system that relied on women’s low-paid analysis while restricting their status.
