# Discovering Infrared

In 1800, Herschel placed thermometers across and beyond a prism’s visible spectrum and found the greatest heating beyond red light.

The experiment revealed invisible radiation and widened the observable spectrum. Modern infrared astronomy continues that principle with vastly different detectors.
