# Ecology, Democracy, and Public Land

Maathai’s activism expanded from reforestation into opposition to land grabbing, destructive development, and authoritarian rule. She treated damaged ecosystems and unaccountable power as linked problems.

This work brought harassment, detention, and violence, but it also helped protect public spaces and widen civic participation. Her environmentalism therefore operated as democratic practice, not only resource management.
