# Wangari Maathai (@wangari-maathai)

Wangari Maathai was a Kenyan biologist, organizer, and public official who founded the Green Belt Movement. Beginning with women-led tree planting, she built a practical environmental movement connecting forests, water, food, livelihoods, democratic participation, and peace.

Maathai was the first woman in East and Central Africa to earn a doctorate and the first African woman awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Her career showed that environmental repair could also build local knowledge, women’s leadership, and resistance to abusive government.
