# Sociology and the Color Line

Du Bois used historical and empirical research to analyze racial inequality as a social structure rather than a matter of individual prejudice alone. His Philadelphia study and later work combined data, maps, observation, and historical interpretation to document Black communities and the effects of discrimination.

This research supported his broader claim that the color line was a defining problem of modern life. Scholarship and reform were therefore closely connected in his sociology.
